So, you want to read some sweet sweet danmei?  Broadly speaking, English-language danmei can be divided into two categories: officially licensed and published; and unofficially translated and disseminated. So your first step is to figure out if the story you want to read has been officially licensed or has a unlicensed fan translation. If you’re looking for an English-language fan translation, check out this post on how to find it.

If you’re looking for a published book, you’ll need to figure out who the publisher is, as this will determine where you can buy it. For officially licensed U.S. danmei translations, there are a small number of active novel publishers: SevenSeas, Rosmei, and Via Lactea are the most active currently. For a quick fix, you can support this site and buy SevenSeas danmei directly from bookshop.org. For more information and options, check out the posts below. I’ll be adding more guides in the future. If you have suggestions for additional posts focusing on other publishers or locations, please let me know!

*For officially licensed works, please buy them even if you can find a fan translation that pre-dated the official license. After all, that’s how the authors who write these amazing stories are able to pay their bills.  Readers buying their work is what will enable them to keep writing, especially in the face of censorship and other pressures.  It also sends a message to publishers that we love this content and want more of it.  Win-win for everyone.
