Seven Seas Danmei Releases I’m Most Excited About
We are rich in spirit (but not in wallet) with all the official English danmei releases this year. I’m so excited to jump into new stories or (maybe? hopefully?) see the completion of some longer-running ones. I started to write a post about all the books I’m excited about this year, but there were just too many! So I’m going to break them down by publisher and do a series of posts over the next few weeks highlighting them. We’re starting today with the largest publisher, Seven Seas! Keep your eye out for Rosmei next.
Preferences
First, though, I want to note that this is a not intended to be an overall guide to all releases! I have my own preferences that guide what I’m interested in reading. There are amazing books that aren’t for me, but thank goodness there are a variety of tastes and interests out there! So if I’m not excited about a title you love, that doesn’t mean it isn’t wonderful. It may just not be my personal cup of tea.
Here’s what does tend to be my cup of tea:
- Finished stories: I prefer to only read a story when I can finish it (whether through official or fan translation or hopping back-and-forth). I might collect special edition volumes, but I won’t start reading until there’s a clear line of sight to the end.
- Genres: I love xianxia, wuxia, historical, steampunk, science fiction, urban fantasy, and mythology. Not a huge fan of horror, dystopian, or contemporary/modern/slice-of-life.
- Competent leads: I love a power couple, and I love seeing people being smart and competent together.
- Compelling romance: Many tropes can work here! I love a good slow burn, enemies-to-lovers, or star-struck pair. Regardless of trope, I need the romance to feel real and important to the characters and the story, not an afterthought.
Eagerly Anticipating
With that in mind, here are the coming-soon danmei releases from Seven Seas that I’m most excited about. The links on this page point to my bookshop.org affiliate, from which I may make a small commission. For other recommended ways to buy, check out this post.
- Astrolabe Rebirth by Fei Tian Ye Xiang: love science fiction as a vehicle for exploring alternate ways of living, plus ancient prophecies plus romance. Yum. Love FTYX’s writing so far. One volume is a short story by danmei standards. I’m not sure if that will feel entirely too brief, but I’m excited to give it a try.
- Copper Coins by Mu Su Li: One of the main characters is a dragon-turned-into-a-paper-doll and I almost don’t need to know anything else to be excited for this story.
- Dinghai Fusheng Records by Fei Tian Ye Xiang: Pretty much the same as Legend of Exorcism, this looks like it’s going to hit a lot of notes for me. I can’t wait.
- Legend of Exorcism by Fei Tian Ye Xiang: I’m a fan so far of FTYX’s writing, I have a special place in my heart for high fantasy, and I’ve heard nothing but praise for this novel. With the first four (of eight) books of the official English release planned for 2025, I’m definitely excited for this one.
- Three Hundred Years of Longing by Mu Su Li: Mysterious circumstances, magic, mythological beings, yep. I’m in.
- Thrice Married to a Salted Fish by Bi Ka Bi: Unlike other books with fish in the title, this involves no actual fish but is sweet, sometimes fluffy, and surprisingly emotional. I’ve already read a fan translation of this and I adored it so much. I’m looking forward to more art and a fresh re-read when the official volumes are released.
Curiously Anticipating
And here are the Seven Seas releases I’m curious about, but not entirely sold on yet:
- The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou: I really want to give this one a try, but only when we actually get the end in print. Will that be 2025? I hope so but I’m not holding my breath with the penultimate volume currently planned for a November 2025 release.
- Mistakenly Saving the Villain by Feng Yu Nie: Transmigration usually isn’t my thing, but I know this is a real favorite of many so I may give it a try.
- My Husband and I Sleep in a Coffin by Wu Shui Bu Du: I really can’t make heads or tails of this one, but I’ll admit that the description definitely leaves me curious.
- Peerless by Meng Xi Shi: I wasn’t a fan of Thousand Autumns by the same author, but I’ve heard Peerless is a little more romantic, so curious to give it a try when the series is finished.
What are you most excited about? Any stellar titles I’m missing out on?
